Combatting Sexism in the Media: The Genre Médias Project

Project Description

Introduction

The Genre Médias project, initiated by S-Com and Nighthawks, is dedicated to analyzing and addressing sexist and LGBTQIAphobic narratives and representations in the media. Through various initiatives, Genre Médias provides platforms for women and gender minorities working within the media industry to voice their experiences and find support.

Our Mission

Genre Médias aims to combat sexism in the media by employing a range of tools and strategies:

1. Socio-Artistic Workshops

We conduct socio-artistic workshops designed to raise awareness among young people about gender issues and the invisibility of women in the media sector. These workshops include the creation of video portraits of women working in media, guiding participants through discussions on representation, role models, and the sexist stereotypes that surround women’s presence on screen.

2. Creation of a Manifesto and Analysis Framework

In collaboration with students from ISFSC and media professionals, we have developed a dynamic manifesto and analytical framework highlighting the importance of fighting sexism. The Genre Médias Manifesto, structured around seven key principles, serves as an evolving tool advocating for genuinely inclusive media.

3. Building a Network and Media Library

We are establishing a network and media library that compile tools and resources created in Francophone Belgium to combat sexism in the media. This repository serves as a vital resource for those committed to fostering inclusivity in media.

4. Organizing Safer Spaces

We regularly organize safer spaces specifically for women and gender minorities in the broader media sector. These non-mixed, chosen spaces are crucial for sharing stories related to sexism in the media, providing professionals with the opportunity to testify, support one another, and find solidarity.

5. Hosting Events and Workshops

To promote the Manifesto for Inclusive Media, we organize various events, including debates and workshops. These events foster collective efforts to identify and implement effective solutions in the fight against sexism in the media.

Our Founders

Genre Médias was created by feminist activists Alizée Honoré from Nighthawks Productions and Valentina Zoccali from S-Com. Their commitment to gender equality in the media drives the ongoing efforts and initiatives of Genre Médias.

Join us in the fight for inclusive media. Together, we can create a more equitable and representative media landscape.
