The non-consensual sharing of intimate images or videos, often mislabeled as “revenge porn,” is more accurately termed Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery (NCII). This terminology is crucial as it shifts the focus from any supposed motive of revenge to the real issue: the lack of consent and the severe violation of privacy involved. NCII represents a devastating breach of trust, leaving victims to deal with profound emotional, psychological, and sometimes even physical consequences. As technology evolves and social media becomes increasingly embedded in our lives, the occurrence of NCII has surged, affecting countless individuals worldwide. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for greater sensibilisation around this issue. Raising awareness is critical—not just to understand the severe legal ramifications of NCII but also to empower individuals with the knowledge of how to react if they or someone they know becomes a victim. Education on this topic is essential for both prevention and support, ensuring that everyone recognizes the importance of consent and the deep harm that NCII inflicts on its victims. By spreading awareness and fostering a deeper understanding, we can work together to combat this violation of privacy and trust, supporting those affected and preventing future incidents.
In 2023, S-Com collaborated with the Belgian municipality of Koekelberg and with Infor Jeunes Schaerbeek to create an educational and awareness-raising campaign on the topic.
The campaign comprised a training session and a series of informative content. The training, which was carried out with educators and cultural workers in June 2023, helped participants identify what Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery (NCII) is and how to react if they encounter it. This initiative aimed to equip these professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to support victims and spread awareness. By empowering them with this understanding, the campaign ultimately enabled them to better assist those affected by NCII and contribute positively to their communities.
On the other hand, we also created informative content to spread knowledge to the general public. We have developed several resources designed to educate and inform the public about this serious issue:
We’ve created a comprehensive flyer that outlines the key facts about NCII, including the legal consequences and steps to take if you or someone you know is affected. [Download the flyer here].
To ensure our message reaches a broad audience, we produced two informative videos available in both French and Dutch. These videos provide a clear and concise overview of NCII, its impact, and the importance of consent in sharing intimate images.
We also developed targeted social media content to further spread awareness and engage the community in meaningful discussions about NCII. These posts are designed to be easily shared, helping to amplify the reach of our campaign.
We encourage you to explore these resources, share them within your networks, and help us raise awareness about NCII. Together, we can work towards a safer, more informed community.
